Compare Auto-Loan Offers Beyond the Monthly Payment

Put the same transaction on both sides of the comparison.

Compare auto-loan offers using the amount financed, APR, term, payment schedule and other written charges together. A smaller payment can reflect a different transaction or a longer repayment period. Keep the vehicle price, trade and optional products identifiable before deciding that two offers are comparable.

First make sure the offers describe the same purchase

Label the candidate by VIN and record the written vehicle price and included equipment. Then identify cash paid, the trade allowance and any payoff handled in the transaction. If those inputs change between offers, the financing comparison has changed before you even reach the rate.

Ask which optional products and charges are included in the amount financed. Keep a copy of each complete offer rather than a screenshot of a single payment. Mark the date, conditions and any unanswered questions on the same sheet.

Read the terms together

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau identifies loan amount, APR/interest rate, loan length and payment as important comparison inputs. Its guidance explains that extending the term can reduce the payment while increasing total interest. The result depends on the actual offer.

The FTC similarly emphasizes written transaction information and total costs. Review the actual disclosures and ask whether the terms are final and approved. A promotional headline or preliminary estimate is not the complete contract for your transaction.

A smaller payment can add up to more payments

Here is teaching arithmetic, not an offer: 60 payments of $500 add to $30,000. Seventy-two payments of $450 add to $32,400. The second payment is smaller, but the sum of those payments is $2,400 higher.

That calculation alone does not establish which real loan costs less. It leaves out any different amount financed, cash due, fees, payment structure and other terms. It also does not calculate an APR. Use it as a reminder to read the full schedule and disclosed totals, not as a substitute for them.

Keep affordability and offer comparison connected

A loan comparison does not cover every cost of owning the vehicle. Consider insurance, fuel, maintenance and other applicable ownership costs in your own budget. An offer can look attractive beside another offer while still missing your household’s needs.

If a number is unclear, request an explanation before signing. Ask what changes if an optional product is removed or another input is changed, then obtain the revised written terms. Do not assume the original payment, rate or eligibility remains available after the transaction changes.

This is a general organization method, not a recommendation for a particular loan, approval decision or borrowing amount. Bonham Chrysler can discuss the current transaction and financing process; eligibility and available terms require the applicable review.

Questions worth asking

Is the lowest payment automatically the lowest-cost loan?

No. Compare the complete written transaction and repayment terms. A lower payment can involve more payments or different costs.

Does this worksheet predict my approval or APR?

No. It organizes actual offers; it does not determine eligibility, quote a rate or replace the disclosures for your transaction.
