Choosing a Truck for the Whole Fishing Trip

The boat is only part of what leaves your driveway.

Picture the trip you actually want: friends in the cab, coolers packed, tackle loaded and the boat ready for a full day. Now picture choosing a truck from the boat’s empty weight alone. Those are different shopping decisions.

Start with the busiest trip you intend to make. A sensible boat-truck shortlist should account for the complete loaded combination, the people riding along and the practical work of storing, hitching and launching. This worksheet helps you gather that evidence before comparing trucks. It does not establish a towing rating or provide launch instructions.

One trip. Three places weight can hide.

  1. In the truck: people, their bags, tools and added equipment.
  2. On the trailer: the boat and everything it carries for the trip.
  3. At the connection: hitch hardware and the trailer load carried by the truck.

Record each item once in the correct accounting method. If an item is already included in a measured total, do not deduct its weight a second time.

Make two packing lists before making a truck list

Your quiet weekday fishing trip and your biggest regular outing may have different demands. Write down both. Include the passengers you actually expect, the gear they bring, and additions you are considering after purchase.

For the truck list, think beyond tackle: a bed cover, toolbox, recovery equipment, extra hitch hardware and anything permanently installed can matter. For the trailer list, establish exactly what is included in the weight evidence you have. Ask whether a quoted boat-and-trailer number represents the equipment and fluids in your planned travel condition. Do not guess what a brochure’s label includes.

Request evidence for the actual truck

A model badge is a useful search filter. It is not the finished capability check. Ask for clear photographs of the candidate’s tire-and-loading label and certification label, then obtain the correct configuration-specific towing information. Match the VIN and model year across the records you are using.

Your complete evaluation needs the applicable vehicle, axle, combined, tire, hitch and trailer ratings, along with the required towing equipment and manufacturer instructions. A truck that clears one limit may still fail another. A bigger advertised towing maximum cannot resolve a rear-axle or carrying-capacity problem.

For a RAM capability example and loading questions, use our RAM 2500 towing and payload guide. Confirm the actual vehicle configuration and every applicable limit. Neither article replaces actual measurements or qualified setup assistance.

The launch question deserves its own conversation

Tell the seller how you intend to use the truck, including the launch facilities you expect to visit. Discuss the installed drivetrain, tires and applicable operating instructions. Do not treat “4x4” as a promise that a slippery, steep or otherwise unsuitable ramp will be manageable.

Ask the facility operator about current access and conditions before traveling. If conditions or a procedure are unclear, stop and obtain appropriate local assistance. This article deliberately makes no traction guarantee and gives no instruction to immerse a truck, select a particular drive mode or attempt a recovery.

Our AWD and 4WD field guide can help you identify the questions to ask about the controls. The actual vehicle’s manual governs how its system is used.

Check the part of ownership that happens at home

Measure your storage and maneuvering area with the actual truck-and-trailer combination in mind. Can you open the doors where you park? Where will loose hitch equipment and wet gear go? Can the bed and cab hold the items that should not travel in the boat?

Compare rear-seat space with your regular passengers and the driver’s seat in its normal position. Try the cooler, bags or storage boxes you intend to use. An empty display vehicle can make a space problem easy to overlook. These are proposed fit checks, not tests we claim to have performed.

Bring a trip brief, not just a tow number

Send Bonham Chrysler your boat/trailer identity, documented loading information, passenger plan and intended use. Ask for available candidates that can be checked against the complete requirement. Confirm the actual vehicle and equipment before traveling.

The goal is a shortlist you can explain: what the truck must carry, which evidence supports the match and what remains unresolved. That is a more useful starting point than declaring a winner from the largest number in an advertisement.
