Bonham field notes · Buying & ownership
Compare the event covered before comparing the product name.
A factory warranty, a vehicle service contract and GAP address different questions. Put the actual agreement in front of you, identify the event it addresses and compare its exclusions, costs and claim process. A familiar label is not a complete description of coverage.
Three categories, three starting questions
Category descriptions are general. The actual agreement, provider and applicable terms control eligibility and any claim.
Factory warranty
Which defects or malfunctions are covered, and within what stated time and mileage limits?
Service contract
Which repairs or services does this separately purchased agreement promise to perform or pay for?
GAP
After an applicable total-loss or theft event, what difference between the finance balance and insurance payment may this agreement address?
Start with the event, not the sales label
The FTC distinguishes a warranty included with a vehicle from an optional auto service contract purchased separately. A product marketed as an extended warranty may be a service contract. The name alone does not tell you what it covers or who is responsible for it.
GAP is not a repair plan. CFPB guidance describes its relationship to the difference between a loan balance and an insurance payment in an applicable loss situation. Do not assume every balance, charge or event is covered; obtain and read the particular terms.
Check what you already have
Identify the exact vehicle and any existing written coverage. Record applicable dates, mileage limits, transfer conditions and the provider. If information about remaining coverage is uncertain, request confirmation rather than treating the original new-vehicle terms as the current answer.
Next, compare the proposed product against those records. Ask where it overlaps existing protection, where it adds something and what remains excluded. This is a way to organize questions, not a determination that an individual vehicle or repair qualifies.
Ask what the claim experience requires
Read the sections on authorization, eligible facilities, deductibles and required records. Ask who must be contacted and when. Keep the actual provider’s instructions with the agreement so a later concern does not begin with a search for the responsible company.
Also ask about the contract term, cancellation process and any refund calculation that applies. Do not assume different products have identical rules. Get explanations and promises in writing, with the agreement identified, instead of relying on a brief description that omits conditions.
Separate product cost from the loan payment
Request the product price and whether it is included in the proposed amount financed. Compare the financing proposal with optional additions identifiable. A small payment change is not the same information as the product’s full cost or the overall financing totals.
CFPB guidance says these products are generally optional in auto lending. Resolve any claim that a product is required using the applicable written documents and authoritative guidance. Questions readers ask
Is GAP the same as an extended warranty?
No. They address different situations. Read the actual agreements rather than treating the labels as interchangeable.
Does this guide confirm a claim will be paid?
No. Claim eligibility depends on the actual agreement, vehicle, event and applicable terms.
