2026 RAM 1500 Engine Guide

BONHAM CHRYSLER • VEHICLE RESEARCH

Four engine choices give the 2026 RAM 1500 four different personalities. The useful question is not simply which makes the most horsepower. It is which engine, cab, axle and equipment combination fits the truck you will actually drive, load and tow with.

Quick answer

The 2026 RAM 1500 lineup offers a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 with eTorque, a 5.7-liter HEMI V8 with eTorque, a 3.0-liter Hurricane and a high-output Hurricane. Engine availability varies by trim and configuration. Start with the job, then compare the complete build.

Read horsepower and towing as separate specifications

RAM lists a maximum 11,610-pound towing capacity for the 2026 1500 range and a maximum 2,360-pound payload. Those are separate maximums for qualifying builds. They are not a promise that one truck can achieve both at once. The highest-output engine is not automatically the highest-rated tow vehicle.

Horsepower and torque describe engine output. A truck’s permitted load also depends on its configuration and ratings. A luxury cabin, larger cab, drivetrain choice and installed accessories change the truck you are evaluating. Compare the VIN-specific vehicle, not a maximum borrowed from a different build.

How to choose between the four engines

If most days mean commuting, school runs, hardware-store trips and light cargo, begin by checking whether a V6 build meets the heaviest job you realistically expect. There is no benefit in choosing an engine around a trailer you will never own, but it is equally unhelpful to ignore an upcoming purchase.

If the HEMI matters to you, drive a HEMI truck and a Hurricane truck on the same route. Compare the response, sound, controls and price for yourself. This guide does not claim a road-test result or a winner on refinement. The published output figures are useful; your own driving experience answers a different question.

For a Hurricane build, distinguish standard output from high output. Do not assume that every listing mentioning Hurricane has the same engine tune, fuel requirements or equipment. Ask for the window sticker and the applicable owner’s manual before making a fuel-cost or towing comparison.

Match the engine to the rest of the truck

Write down the cab, bed, drivetrain and must-have equipment before requesting quotes. Ask Bonham to identify the engine and axle ratio on each candidate. Then compare the actual payload label and towing information. A lower-priced listing can be a different configuration rather than a better deal on the same truck.

Roof equipment, running boards, toolboxes and other accessories also belong in the ownership discussion. Tell us what you plan to add after purchase. For a trailer, include its loaded weight and hitch load, not only the brochure’s empty weight.

A practical towing conversation

Bring the trailer make, model, loaded weight estimate and hitch information. Add the people, luggage, tools and equipment that will travel in the truck. We can help you find the manufacturer information for candidate builds and identify where a heavier-duty truck deserves consideration.

For an occasional boat or utility trailer, a properly configured 1500 may be appropriate. A regularly loaded livestock trailer or large RV deserves a separate configuration check. Start with the existing RAM 1500 versus 2500 comparison if the load is driving the decision; do not try to solve a capacity shortfall by choosing a richer 1500 trim.

Ownership costs: compare the assumptions

Use the fuel-economy label for the exact vehicle instead of applying a single MPG number to every engine. Estimate annual miles, your expected fuel price and the amount of towing. Calculate fuel cost as annual miles divided by expected MPG, multiplied by price per gallon. That is a planning estimate, not a prediction.

Ask our service team for maintenance guidance for the VIN and how you use it. Keep the purchase price, fuel budget, insurance quote and maintenance discussion separate from the monthly payment. A longer loan term can lower a payment without making the truck less expensive.

Frequently asked questions

Is the HEMI available in the 2026 RAM 1500?

Yes, the 5.7-liter HEMI V8 with eTorque is offered on select 2026 configurations. Confirm the engine on the selected vehicle or accepted factory order.

Is the high-output Hurricane the best engine for towing?

Not automatically. It has the highest horsepower in this engine table, but tow ratings belong to a complete truck configuration. Match the truck to the trailer using its actual ratings.

Can I pick any engine with any trim?

No. Trim, cab, drivetrain, package availability and current order restrictions can limit combinations. Ask for a build-specific check.

Does eTorque mean I plug the truck in?

No. These eTorque applications are not plug-in charging configurations. Consult the model-specific owner’s information for how the system operates.

Should I compare a 2500 before ordering?

Yes if the 1500’s actual payload or trailer ratings do not leave enough room for your planned use. Choose the truck around the complete load.
