2026 RAM 3500 Fifth-Wheel and Payload Guide

BONHAM CHRYSLER • VEHICLE RESEARCH

The RAM 3500 is a serious candidate when the trailer is a central part of the truck’s working life. Before choosing the cabin and trim, establish the loaded trailer, hitch arrangement and carrying requirements. Those details decide which 3500 belongs on your shortlist.

Quick answer

A suitable fifth-wheel truck must satisfy more than its trailer-weight rating. Check loaded pin weight, the truck’s payload and axle limits, combined weight, hitch rating and clearance. RAM’s 36,610-pound diesel towing maximum does not apply to every 2026 RAM 3500.

Start with the loaded trailer

A fifth-wheel’s empty shipping weight does not describe a trip with water, food, batteries, tools and personal equipment aboard. A livestock or equipment trailer changes as animals, supplies or machines change. Use the loaded condition you intend to operate, including a realistic allowance for what you have not purchased yet.

Ask the trailer manufacturer for its ratings and loading instructions. If you already own it, measured loaded weights are more useful than a guess from a listing. Bring that information to the truck comparison before choosing a particular trim.

Pin weight and a worked planning example

Pin weight is carried by the truck. For an illustrative calculation, assume a particular truck’s payload label shows 4,200 pounds. Subtract 600 pounds of occupants, 250 pounds of hitch equipment and 300 pounds of other carried items: 3,050 pounds remain in that simplified payload budget.

That example is arithmetic, not a RAM specification and not approval for a 3,050-pound pin load. Axle, tire, hitch, truck, trailer and combined ratings still need to be checked, along with actual loaded weights. The point is to account for the whole trip before assuming there is room for the trailer’s pin weight.

Single rear wheel or dually?

Compare single-rear-wheel and dual-rear-wheel configurations using their individual ratings and your use. A dual-rear-wheel truck may be part of the solution for demanding loads, but the badge does not select the correct engine, axle, cab or hitch for you.

Think about where the truck lives between trips. Measure the parking space, gates and other access points. Consider how the vehicle will be used without the trailer. Bonham’s SRW-versus-dually comparison helps organize those practical questions; the weight analysis determines whether both choices remain viable.

The prep package is the start of the hitch discussion

RAM offers a Fifth-Wheel/Gooseneck Prep Package with factory mounting provisions. Verify that the exact truck has it. Then select the compatible hitch or ball system and confirm its rating, installation requirements and what is included in the quote.

Inspect turning clearance, trailer-to-bed clearance and the effect of the selected hitch position. Follow the truck, hitch and trailer instructions as a system. Different trailers and hitch designs can require different solutions, so avoid a one-size-fits-all assumption.

Pickup and chassis cab are separate decisions

A 3500 pickup and a 3500 chassis cab are not interchangeable specification sheets. If your plan includes a service body, flatbed or another upfit, start with the chassis-cab information and the body builder’s requirements. Account for the completed body and equipment before discussing remaining load capacity.

The same logic applies to a pickup carrying a substantial toolbox or other permanent equipment. Make the planned additions visible in the buying discussion. A quote for the base vehicle is not a completed work-truck specification.

From a ranch load to a written truck specification

For a Northeast Texas ranch application, describe the heaviest normal trip: trailer, livestock or equipment, people, supplies and hitch. Nottingham Ranch is a relevant context for that discussion, but a ranch label is not a test result. Ask for the actual vehicle and trailer numbers.

Turn the result into a written shortlist: wheel configuration, engine, cab, bed, axle and essential towing equipment. Only then compare trim materials and convenience features. This order makes it easier to recognize when a visually appealing listing is the wrong configuration.

Delivery and ownership checks

At handoff, match the VIN and window sticker to the agreed truck and verify the installed hitch equipment. Ask for a demonstration of any towing assistance features that are included. Store the rating information with the owner’s manual and trailer documents.

Plan maintenance around towing, mileage and operating conditions rather than a universal interval from an unrelated truck. Bonham can help you identify the applicable service information and arrange ongoing support.

Frequently asked questions

Will a luxury 3500 tow more than a basic trim?

Not necessarily. Engine, axle, cab, drivetrain, equipment and ratings determine capacity. Trim price is not a capacity rating.

Can the maximum gas payload and diesel towing figures describe one truck?

No. They are separate engine-family maximums. Use one actual truck’s specifications for your calculation.

Should I buy a dually before choosing the trailer?

If possible, define the trailer and its loaded requirements first. That makes the wheel-configuration decision more informed.

Can I use this example as my towing limit?

No. The worked example illustrates payload accounting only. It does not establish a permitted trailer or pin weight.

Where should an upfit buyer start?

Use Bonham’s chassis-cab page and provide the body, equipment and load requirements. The completed truck needs its own specification review.
