Bonham · Commercial truck planning
A RAM 3500 Chassis Cab is an incomplete commercial truck designed for a compatible work-body installation. Start with the body you need—a flatbed, service body or other vocational setup—then match its dimensions, installed weight and equipment needs to the chassis.
It is a different configuration from the RAM 3500 pickup. Pickup towing figures and trim availability do not automatically apply. This guide separates the chassis decision from the completed truck's usable capacity.

2026 capability reference
For 2026, properly equipped RAM 3500 Chassis Cab configurations reach up to 25,680 pounds of trailer weight with the Cummins diesel, or up to 7,710 pounds of chassis payload with the gas engine and heavy-duty eight-speed transmission. These are configuration-specific maximums, not ratings for every truck.
| Engine and transmission | Maximum trailer weight | Maximum chassis payload |
|---|---|---|
| 6.4L HEMI V8 · 8HP75 eight-speed | 16,000 lb | 7,390 lb |
| 6.4L HEMI V8 · 8AP430HD eight-speed | 18,880 lb | 7,710 lb |
| 6.7L Cummins Turbo Diesel · heavy-duty eight-speed | 25,680 lb | 6,830 lb |
Source: RAM's 2026 Chassis Cab towing and payload chart (PDF), checked October 3, 2026. Maximum towing and maximum payload may require different configurations and cannot be used simultaneously. Body, accessories, passengers, cargo and hitch load reduce remaining capacity. Confirm the actual truck's GVWR, axle ratings, GCWR, tires, hitch and completed-vehicle limits. This table does not apply to the RAM 3500 pickup or to other model years.
Start with gas when comparing purchase cost, your regular route and a load plan that fits the selected chassis. Include idling, trip length and any auxiliary-equipment requirements in the discussion. The transmission matters: the two gas rows above have different ratings.
Evaluate diesel when your working combination requires its available towing configurations. Compare the complete truck and trailer weights, fuel and maintenance needs, and your expected workload. A diesel badge alone does not establish usable payload.
Ask the equipment maker whether the body needs a power take-off, electric power or a separate power source. Confirm engine, transmission, PTO provisions and installation compatibility before selecting a VIN.
Match the chassis to the body
The 2026 Chassis Cab lineup offers Tradesman and Big Horn. Choose the equipment your drivers need, then verify the body fit and weight plan independently of the trim badge.
Start with a work-focused specification. Compare the actual window sticker for seating, storage, connectivity, mirrors and factory upfit provisions. Identify required equipment before comparing prices.
Compare cab appointments and available convenience packages for drivers who spend long days in the truck. Ask for a side-by-side equipment list on the specific vehicles under consideration.
Single rear wheels and dual rear wheels have different chassis configurations and ratings. Compare loaded rear-axle demand, body width, tire capacity, access and the finished truck's intended use.
In the 2026 RAM 3500 Chassis Cab range, Regular Cab configurations include 60- or 84-inch cab-to-axle options; Crew Cab uses a 60-inch cab-to-axle configuration. Availability also depends on rear-wheel and powertrain choices. Cab-to-axle is a fitment dimension, not the same as wheelbase or body length.
Bring the body manufacturer's drawing, required mounting points, installed weight and clearance requirements. Have the upfitter confirm compatibility before the chassis purchase.

Plan the completed truck
The work body uses part of the chassis payload allowance. So do installed equipment, passengers, tools, materials and trailer tongue or pin weight. A chassis headline is the starting point for a weight budget.
Suppose a configuration has a 6,000-pound starting payload allowance. A 2,000-pound body, 500 pounds of installed equipment, 500 pounds of occupants and 700 pounds of tools leave 2,300 pounds before additional cargo or hitch load. This hypothetical subtraction does not confirm axle balance, towing capacity or the legality of a completed combination.
Review the completed vehicle documentation and weigh the truck in working condition. Check front and rear axle loads as well as total weight; staying below one limit does not establish compliance with the others.
For a flatbed carrying feed, fencing supplies or equipment, list the heaviest normal load and any trailer pin or tongue weight. Include passengers and permanently mounted tools, then consider gates, turning room and travel surfaces.
Count the body, stocked compartments, racks, compressor and crew. Ask the body maker about weight distribution and access. A truck that fits an empty body may not fit the fully stocked workday.
Provide operating power requirements, mounting instructions and installed weight. Review cooling, electrical provisions, controls and installation responsibilities with the equipment supplier and upfitter.

Direct answers
A Chassis Cab is selected around a commercial body or upfit. Compare the body mounting requirements, chassis dimensions and completed-truck ratings instead of assuming a pickup’s equipment or capacity applies.
No. The installed body and equipment, passengers and other carried weight affect the capacity remaining for your load. Review the completed vehicle and axle ratings with the upfitter.
Bring the body specification, installed weight estimate, cab-to-axle requirements, equipment power needs, typical load and any trailer details.
